This programme carries out activities to follow-up on negotiation processes and to support peace treaties in Europe and Asia, as well as to supervise the implementation of agreements. The programme contributes to practical initiatives of peacebuilding in societies that, at least formally, have overcome violent conflict and support the formulation of innovative strategies and means to prevent future conflicts, by understanding the causes and identifying common interests between political actors and the rest of society. The programme strives to improve international action in crisis situations in this area, with special attention given to initiating new civilian measures for crisis managementin coordination with the security apparatus. Lastly, it promotes the creation and strengthening of democratic institutions to consolidate peace.
