Latin America is assuming a new geopolitical international role. In 2008, a South American country (Brazil) presided over the G-20 meeting in Washington, and two others (Mexico and Argentina) participated by their own right in the meeting. But Latin America´s regional weight in multinational organizations is not only political. The importance being given to the region in energy markets and the relevance acquired in the global arms race is providing Latin American countries a greater and more rigorous role regarding these topics.
Latin America is projecting itself as an international actor, and this not only demands that it be prepared to influence global geopolitics, but also to have clear mechanisms to pursue the most viable course in the emerging new world order.
However, the panorama is quite complex. On one hand, the convergence of regional governments challenging the leadership of the United States in the region, with Brazil aiming to acquire this leadership of Latin America, marked the emergence of a ¨South American Community of Nations¨. On the other hand, there is the Secretary General of South American Nations, and in the middle of these are two large international players, including the Organization of American States (OAS), that are also striving to propel the region´s influence in the world, and to help resolve tensions and conflicts between member countries.
Considering the importance these disputes will have on the regional leadership for the future of Latin America, as well as the complexity of the regional integration processes, CITpax has decided to open a space of analysis to identify alternatives for working together towards constructive dialogue between parties.
This would be an institutional effort oriented to promoting dialogue as a formula to building consensus and contribute to consolidating processes of regional integration and to position Latin America as a relevant actor in the new world order.
